Day 5: Smile!

Day 5: Smile!

We left home early this morning in an attempt to beat the crowds and the blistering sun, and do some weekly shopping. Of course, it’s the middle of August and the tourist season is in full swing, cars everywhere, people impatient to get where they’re going, hooting and gesturing.. It  made me wonder how often we forget to notice the little things around us on the most ordinary of days. So I made a mental note to notice what brought a smile to my face instead of what annoyed me (very easy in tourist-laden streets during the summer)..

In just a few hours I caught myself smiling at:

  • a beautiful, lovingly-crafted stone wall in our village
  • Pale pink gauzy curtains dancing in the breeze
  • Baby grape vines not much bigger than pot plants
  • Colourful bunting connecting trees down a shady road
  • Swallows flying low as they called to one another
  • A lanky, eclectic-looking man with long hair billowing behind hi,  racing down the road on a tiny scooter
  • The sound of crickets
  • The way the light caught a road sign and created an iridescent rainbow of colours
  • An old-fashioned bridge, ivy gently separating the bricks as cars cross slowly in one direction at a time (oddly the Postman Pat theme song starts playing in my mind when I see this bridge).
  • Large, tropical-looking orange blooms outside someone’s front door.
  • A man in a wide straw hat smiling while mixing some sort of tar to repair the road
  • A white horse grazing in a field
  • The feel of a cool breeze and the sun on my skin at the same time
  • Colourful plants in the supermarket (I came home with one. You never know it might survive!)
  • A gorgeous little baby boy who turned out to be the first child of 2 of my past students

While intentionally focussing on these moments, negativity had no place in my mind. This kind of frequency expands our energetic field, attracting more of the same. I am now going to do this on a regular basis. It’s so simple but it’ll take practice to make it a habit.
